Route Description:
Difficulty Rating: 0. Route Type:
Each route is designed to provide a challenge; the longer route is a demanding amalgam of technical skill and endurance while the shorter 40 kilometre route is moderate and well suited to intermediate riders. Both routes start off on open jeep-track coupled with some single-track, followed by a gravel road that climbs over the ridge. Here you will come across some rough terrain as you brace yourself for the climb up the notorious Platberg. You will pass flocks of ostriches on the climb, so be quiet because the birds can be aggressive.

For the hardy souls that have taken on the longer ride the climb to the top of the Platberg is relentless and hard, over 1,800 metres of work and toil. Once on top the view over the Witwatersrand is majestic. The descent is fast on jeep- and single-track. There are two short rocky sections, which if inexperienced you should walk. There is a third rocky section where all but the foolhardy will dismount.

From here the route goes on to the Alwynspoort gravel road and along a single-track loop past the Eye of Africa entrance. There is an undemanding climb of about two kilometres through a wattle plantation to the second water point where you join the 40 kilometre route. The front riders may encounter some slow traffic at this point but only for a few kilometres.

The shorter 40 kilometre ride splits off before the Platberg. There is a gradual climb on jeep- and single-track up to the second water point. You cross the main gravel road, with the new Heineken Brewery in sight you follow jeep-track over the hill almost all the way to the R59 and the third water point. Once over the final gentle climb to the Drumblade plots where there is a welcome stretch of smooth tarred road followed by the final tiring single-track stretch back to the Lapeng Hotel.

Editor's Notes:
The shorter ride starts an hour later. This gap makes things more manageable for the leaders once they rejoin the shorter distance route. It is notoriously known as Gauteng’s coldest mass participation mountain bike race and celebrates its 16th anniversary in 2015. This makes it arguably one of the oldest mountain bike events on the local calendar which serves the purpose of keeping mountain bikers on their bikes through winter.
