THE RUN

There are three routes to choose from. To be sure the longer 65 kilometre ‘Monster’ has a name to protect, and protect it she does. The half marathon is 33 kilometres and follows some of the marathon route but is better suited to intermediate bikers. The 16 kilometre fun ride is designed specifically with the unfit and younger family members in mind. In each case this is a quality route that embraces mountain and track straight from the heart of Magaliesberg.

As you take the easy ride out of Buffelspoort and cycle through the citrus orchards nearby there will be only one thing on your mind. Along the Buffelspoort Dam it reveals itself – the ‘Monster’. But before we get ahead of ourselves, the climb through Utopia Resort will give some idea of what is in store. Enjoy the easy downhill canter through the Mountain Sanctuary Park for the real business lies ahead. What to say of the ‘Monster’- a nine kilometre pristine epic through prehistoric rock formations. Sweat you will, burn you will and if you have poetry in you, you will pause and gaze out over the Buffelspoort Valley. Vasbyt until you get to Breedtsnek – tamer of the monster. It is true that what goes up will come down and with the refreshment station at your back the canter down the Maanhaarrand dirt road is pure exhilaration. The route winds through Kromrivier and Rietfontein along jeep track and country roads down to the Zuurplaat Road. The 'Monster' has not finished with your test yet, one last demand, one last push before it lets you go along the final stretches of jeep and technical single track through citrus orchards back along the Buffelspoort Dam and to a most welcome finish.

Just like the longer ride, the pleasant ride out of Buffelspoort through the orchards and the dam is yours to enjoy. Bid farewell to those hardened riders who are taking on the ‘Monster’ and be grateful, it is not your concern for today. The route winds its way through Kromrivier along jeep and single track before crossing the second bridge over the Sterkstroom. Sooner than you think you rejoin the longer ride and start back to Buffelspoort and the finish.

EDITORS NOTES

The ‘Monster’ will be staged for the 17th time in 2019 and has seen steady, if not dramatic growth in numbers. It is arguably one of the toughest mountain bike classics in the country. This race is part of the annual citrus festival so there will be plenty to do for the whole family. Beware the naartjies that are thrown at the start of the race.
