The challenge of the Satellite is the measure of restraint you show in the opening stages. It is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security as you take a relaxed cadence along the beautiful Magaliesburg and Hartbeespoort country roads. Here the pace is quick on good road surfaces.
The opening kilometres are fast and quite exhilarating. The charm and beauty of Hartbeespoort Dam will always impress even the most focused. Peacanwood Estate comes and goes, as does the majestic view of the Magalies Park Golf Course. The hills are low in intensity, the riding fast.
The stern climbing really only comes in the second half with a steady uphill pull that may prove enjoyable as you head to Hekpoort. It is here, around the 50-kilometre mark that your early discretion will be rewarded. The notorious Hekpoort Pass is tough, a long five kilometre slog. Once these challenges are done, now with 30 kilometres to go, the road is open and the going is fast. This gives you ample opportunity to regroup and steady yourself for the ride to the line. The downhill finish is fast and clearly marked. All in all this is a very challenging but enjoyable route, very scenic and safe from City traffic congestion. For those looking for a shorter ride be warned, Hekpoort is also on your agenda.
